The Peechi fields in Thrissur have been attracting a large number of visitors in recent days after Tourism Minister PA Muhammad Riyas shared images of the lush, green landscape on his social media handle. However, the photos were taken before the fields were submerged by water from the nearby dam, prompting locals to issue warnings to visitors.
Peechi fields are just five kilometres south to the national highway in Vaniyambara. The road to the fields is narrow and only a single vehicle can pass through here at a time. Besides, one could only travel up to three kilometres in this road.
In the images circulating on social media, the Peechi fields appear lush and green. However, the situation on the ground has changed as the fields are now submerged after the water level in the nearby dam has risen. The area is considered extremely dangerous, with around ten drownings reported so far. Adding to the concerns, several vehicles headed to the fields have recently gotten stuck in the muddy roads leading to the site.
Following this, the local residents led by block panchayat president KK Ramesh, have submitted a formal request urging the authorities to arrange safety measures for the visitors who come to the Peechi fields to enjoy its beauty. They demand to install warnings boards and to prevent dumping waste in the area.
